WHY STUDY IN FRANCE?

If you are thinking about studying abroad, France is the perfect destination. This country offers plenty of opportunities both for students who want to spend a year away from their country and learn a new language and culture as well as for those who want to create a successful future.

France is a country that has a culture full of wonders, starting with gastronomy, passing through their language and finishing with their monuments. You won’t be able to resist having breakfast with their famous croissants and a good coffee or tea while admiring the Eiffel Tower.  Or have a snack with a delicious crêpe in the des Champs-Élysées Avenue. Or even taste their fantastic baguettes, which are unique in the world. You will be able to visit the Louvre and enjoy the Monna Lisa, painted by the famous Leonardo da Vinci and endless breath-taking works of art.

Besides how wonderful this country can be, it stands out for its education. It offers a great number of academic programs available for all disciplines. It should be noted that, despite French being the main spoken language in France, there are more than 1000 degrees that can be taken completely in English. However, it is advisable to learn French.

One of the key points of France teaching is research. The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS, for the French acronym) is the biggest centre of research in the whole country and it is a referent for scientific research. Many scientifical articles have been written thanks to the experiments carried out in this centre.

The duration of the studies depends on the type of degree you are going to study. They usually last between 3 and 5 years.

“Start your unforgettable journey!
Baguettes, Paris, the Eiffel Tower, castles, cheeses, berets the culture of France undoubtedly includes all these aspects, but also much, much more.”

France is waiting for you!

PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

Public universities offer relatively affordable degrees, with good value for money. Many students choose France as a destination for their studies as the country offers a wide range of degrees and a large number of places. The price can vary according to the residence country. Medicine, pharmacy and dentistry degrees can only be studied at public universities, which have agreements with the country’s hospitals.

Public universities are much more economical than private ones, despite many of them being of great renown. Thanks to that, a great amount of exchange students opt for this country, which creates a multi-ethnic environment that encourages diversity.

Private universities

Private universities, on the other hand, have a higher cost and fewer available places. However, they don’t make a distinction between residents and non-residents, the price tends to be the same. Normally they are universities with no more than 20 000 students.

They are self-financing due to loans, research prizes, grants, and the help of former students. State subsidies are not granted to them, but they usually have more advanced facilities and more personalised attention.

GRANDES ÉCOLES

These institutions can be both private and public. They don’t have a great number of students, which provides more closeness between the students and the teachers. The Grandes Écoles offer a wide range of degrees some of which belong to the CGE (Conference of Grandes Écoles). The degree you obtain by studying one of these programs tends to be a Masters’ degree. It lasts around 5 years and has several requirements to gain access.

After secondary school, you must access preparatory classes of 2 years and after that, you will have to sit a competitive entrance exam. Once you have gained access, you will be required to study for 3 more years, which will be even more specialised. Nowadays, for foreign students, there are more ways to be admitted among which is that once you have finished your degree in your home country, you can apply to study at this institution and in just one year you will obtain a master’s degree.

accomodation

There are many accommodation options for the students, both residents and foreigners. Residences on the university campus, shared flats or houses. Usually, you will have at your disposal an individual bedroom and shared bathroom, kitchen, living room and dining room. Some flats have a terrace, others are remodelled, all depends on your budget and its location.

All the options have their advantages and disadvantages, so the decision is based on the comfort and habits of each person. It is advisable to live in a residence during the first months because it provides you more personalized services and you will feel at home. Naturally, a residence has a higher cost than a shared flat, but it will all depend on the area where it is located and the type of bedroom.

specific exams

A great number of universities offer the possibility of studying in English, which means that many of them request some level of certification. They usually ask for a B2 and accept all kinds of certificates: IELTS, TOEFL, FCE, CAE, etc. If you don’t have any of these titles, don’t worry, we offer English language courses.

If you are going to take academic training in French, you will also need to prove your level. You can do it by passing an official French test such as DELF, DALF, TCF or TEF. The common reference is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). If you have completed the baccalaureate in French in an AFEA (Agency for French Education Abroad), proving your level won’t be necessary.

Along with the application form, students must also submit a letter of motivation, their birth certificate with its translation into French, certified copies and official translations of the diplomas or degrees that in Spain allow access to the training they wish to undertake in France, and certified copies of the marks obtained in the last two years of study (if it is the first enrolment for higher education).

estimated annual cost

The cost can vary, bearing in mind factors such as the chosen degree, the type and location of the accommodation and scholarships and grants given. However, what influences the most is the chosen degree. Many degrees like arts, engineering or health are more expensive. Depending on whether it is public or private, the price may increase or decrease, although this is not always true. There are some public universities that due to the reputation achieved through their years of history, fix higher prices than other public universities.

Finally, the estimated price for each institution (without possible scholarships/grants) is:

Public universities: around 700 € for European students and approximately 4 000 € for non-European students.

Private universities: 20,000 €

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

It is possible to apply for several scholarships and grants in France. They are mainly for European students, but there are also some options for students from outside Europe. Some of them are granted by the country and others by universities themselves, sometimes by the destination university or by the departure university.

There are social scholarships. These grants are given mainly to EU students who do not have many resources, in order to give them the opportunity to study abroad. To apply for a grant and find out how much you are entitled to for your financial situation, all you have to do is fill in a form that the French government will provide you with.

We also highlight the academic excellence scholarships, such as the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship, aimed at international students with a very good academic average who want to study in France. The amount given varies between €1,000 and €1,500 per month and is aimed at all those who wish to further their studies, either with a master’s degree or with a doctorate or PhD degree.

FUTURE JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Regarding career prospects, France is one of the best countries. With a minimum monthly salary of 1,512’2 €, it is a country that needs a great number of professionals for different sectors, such as doctors and health professionals.

Moreover, there is a high demand for the research and experimentation sector. Science and technology are in continuous development, which is why they require many researchers from all over the world who have studied at other universities and can provide different points of view. Besides, French people usually work only 35 hours per week.

France is a great economic power. This creates a high demand for students and workers in trade and finance sectors. They search for foreign workers so they can get help with markets from outside France, whether it is to improve their knowledge of the economy or to reach agreements in different languages.
