It's not just a year of life, but a whole life in one year.

WHY STUDY IN GERMANY?

This country is one of the best options when it comes to studying abroad. Located in central Europe, its position is advantageous when travelling as it has borders with nine countries. Travelling around the world is essential while we study since it opens your mind and enriches you in an unusual way.

German universities take in a great number of international students every year, due to the closeness with many European countries and the good location they provide. This creates an ethnic space that encourages diversity and multiculturalism. In addition, there’s a very strong cultural difference among the northern, southern, eastern and western federal states of Germany. This is also something we must bear in mind when it comes to deciding which university we want to study in.

Germany is one of the biggest economic powers in Europe. That is why they offer training courses that meet the expectations of the students. It invests a lot in education and they put faith in the youth at all times. They have a practical approach in businesses, which allows you to open many doors to look for a job and in classrooms, which leaves behind conventional methods.

Degrees tend to last between 3 and 4 years. This counts for every type of university: the technical, as well as the specialized and the conventional.

PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

First, we must highlight that university is free. Some universities request a minimum enrolment fee, which is around 150 € every six months. Many students choose Germany as their study destination since the tuition fees are almost non-existent and it has a good number of places and because of the high reputation of many universities.

Public universities usually have a higher reputation than private ones. Thanks to that, a great number of exchange students opt for this country, which creates a multi-ethnic atmosphere encouraged by the university.

Private universities

Private universities, on the other hand, have a higher cost and fewer places. Nonetheless, they make no distinction between residents and non-resident, and the price tends to be the same. Usually, they are universities with no more than 20.000 students.

They are self-financing thanks to loans, research prizes, scholarships, and grants of former students. State subsidies are not granted to them, but they usually have more advanced facilities and more personalized attention.

FACHHOCHSCHULE (UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES)

This type of study programme has a much more practical approach compared with a standard university. They are based on the acquisition of practical knowledge and specific professional competencies.

It should be noted that after the implementation of the Bologna Plan there is no longer that much difference between classical universities (Hochschule) and those of applied sciences (Fachhochschule). Nonetheless, it always depends on the approach of your studies and the goals you’re aiming for.

There are other types of universities: TU-Technische Universität (Technical University) has a technical approach. The degrees offered tend to be engineering and natural sciences; there are also specialized universities, like Medizinische Hochschule (medical university), Musikhochschule (music school) or Kunsthochschule (art school) among others. They are focused on specific areas of expertise.

accomodation

There are many accommodation options for the students, both residents and foreigners. Residences on the university campus, shared flats or houses. Usually, you will have at your disposal an individual bedroom and shared bathroom, kitchen, living room and dining room. Some flats have a terrace, others are remodelled, all depends on your budget and its location.

All the options have their advantages and disadvantages, so the decision is based on the comfort and habits of each person. It is advisable to live in a residence during the first months because it provides you with more personalized services and you will feel at home. Naturally, a residence has a higher cost than a shared flat, but it will all depend on the area where it is located and the type of bedroom.

specific exams

It should be noted that knowing German is essential for some university degrees. Depending on the degree you study, a B1 or B2 certified level of German will be required. However, most universities offer the possibility of studying courses in English, which means that many of them request some kind of level certificate. They usually ask for a B2 and accept all kinds of certificates: IELTS, TOEFL, FCE, CAE, etc. If you don’t have any of these titles, don’t worry, we offer you English language courses.

It is also necessary to have studied and passed High School on the specific modality related to the degree you want to apply for.

In case you are not a member of the European Union or you don’t have the High School title needed, you will have to pass the Feststellungsprüfung test. It consists of three parts: one test in German or English language; a general test; and a test about the specialization you’re going to study. There are specific schools that can prepare you to pass this exam. For further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

HOMOLOGATION OF THE GERMAN QUALIFICATIONS

estimated annual cost

The cost can vary, bearing in mind factors such as the chosen degree, the type and location of the accommodation and scholarships and grants given. However, what influences the most is the chosen university. Depending on whether it is public or private, the price may increase or decrease, although this is not always true. There are some public universities that due to the reputation achieved through their years of history, fix higher prices than other public universities. We must also take into account that prices tend to be higher for non-European students.

Finally, the estimated price for each institution (without possible scholarships/grants) is:

Public universities: maximum 300 € per semester

Private universities: 20,000 €

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

Germany has available different scholarships and grants that you can apply for. Mostly they are for European students, but there are also some options available for students from outside Europe. Some are given by the Government and many others by universities themselves sometimes by the destination university or by the departure university.

One of the most famous scholarship foundations is the DAAD. This foundation gives almost 60,000 scholarships every year, which allows many students from all over the world to study with scholarships in an innovative country like Germany. This foundation doesn’t grant scholarships only to European students, but also to international students. You must meet the requirements they ask for having a B1 level of German or English depending on the language your degree is taught.

We must also highlight the Scholarships of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation (FES). They are the most ancient association in Germany and they give an amount of money to fund your studies depending on the requirements you meet. Apart from these two, there are many more scholarships you can apply for depending on the studies you are going to take and the requirements you can meet.

FUTURE JOB OPPORTUNITIES

In terms of job opportunities, Germany is one of the best countries. With an average salary of 52,104€ annually, it is a country that demands a great number of professionals in different sectors, such as doctors and health professionals.

Moreover, there is a high demand for the research and experimentation sector. Science and technology are in continuous development, which is why they require many researchers from all over the world who have studied at other universities and can provide different points of view.

Germany is one of the most important economic powers in the world. This creates a high demand for students and workers in the trade and finance sectors. They search for foreign workers so they can get help with markets from outside Germany, whether it is to improve their knowledge of the economy or to reach agreements in different languages.
