2study in the Netherlands

It's not just a year of life, but a whole life in one year.

WHY STUDY IN THE NETHERLANDS?

Located in the northwest of Europe, The Netherlands is the perfect destination to make progress in your studies. Covered in windmills and tulips, it is positioned as the fifth in the global ranking of happiness according to the World Happiness Report. Many people have emigrated to this country in search of opportunities and improvement in their lives. The Netherlands is a country with a profound desire to grow thanks to constant reforms and improvements included in social development by the leaders of the country.

The academic system in The Netherlands differs from the common system of other universities, thanks to the lecturer’s quality of teaching, the offered resources, and the interdisciplinary range offered through the degree. All this aims to a revolutionary educative system.

The teaching quality lies in the lecturer’s competence and the forefront infrastructure. This makes learning more enjoyable and practical, where it is possible to experience first-hand the professional field that, later, will arise daily.

In fact, according to the Pisa report, The Netherlands is placed over the average of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) in the creative resolution of problems in real life. Many Dutch universities occupy an excellent position in the global ranking of teaching, among the top 200.

What it’s important is that The Netherlands is a country with quite developed bilingualism, since more than 90% of the population speaks perfect and fluent English, even though the official language is Dutch. In fact, in the academic world, English is almost replacing the local language, especially in higher education. Furthermore, the Dutch themselves speak almost perfect English, so you will be able to immerse yourself in their culture without having a profound knowledge of Dutch. This doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the rich historic background of this language.

The degrees usually last between 3 and 4 years. During your fourth year at the Universities of Applied Sciences, you have to complete an internship in a company. Some degrees such as engineering or medicine usually last a few more years.

PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

Public universities offer studies relatively affordable, with good quality education for a good price. Many students choose The Netherlands as a destination for their studies as they have a wide variety of degrees and a good number of places. The price can vary according to the residence country.

Public universities are much more economical than private ones, despite many of them being renowned. Thanks to that, a great amount of exchange students opt for this country, which creates a multi-ethnic environment that promotes diversity.

Private universities

Private universities, on the other hand, have a higher cost and fewer available vacancies. However, they don’t make a distinction between residents and non-residents, the price tends to be the same.

They are self-funded due to loans, research prizes, grants and the help of former students. State subsidies are not granted to them, but they usually have more advanced facilities and more personalised attention.

APPLIED SCIENCES

This type of study has a much more practical focus compared with a standard university. It is based on the acquisition of practical knowledge and specific professional competencies.

There are 41 universities of applied sciences in The Netherlands and tend to last more than the average (3 years), in other words, four years. The last year is dedicated to helping the students position themselves in the market and grow by completing an internship in an enterprise.

accomodation

There are many accommodation options for the students, both residents and foreigners. Residences on the university campus, shared flats or houses. Usually, you will have at your disposal an individual bedroom and shared bathroom, kitchen, living room and dining room. Some flats have a terrace, others are remodelled, all depends on your budget and its location.

All the options have their advantages and disadvantages, so the decision is based on the comfort and habits of each person. Living in a residence during the first months is advisable because it provides you with more personalized services and you will feel at home. Naturally, a residence has a higher cost than a shared flat, but it will all depend on the area where it is located and the type of bedroom.

specific exams

Most universities offer the possibility of taking classes in English, which means that many of them request some language certificate. They usually ask for a B2 and accept all kinds of certificates: IELTS, TOEFL, FCE, CAE, etc. If you don’t have any of these, don’t worry, we offer English courses!

Some universities carry out aptitude tests to quantify your knowledge levels. This is useful to raise the awareness of both, the university and the student, so they know what topics are going to be discussed and make their final decision.

Certain universities request having studied and passed the VWO (Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs) highest variant in the secondary educational system of The Netherlands.

HOMOLOGATION OF THE DUTCH QUALIFICATIONS

Depending on your country of origin, the process for obtaining the homologation will be different. Therefore, you can check the website of the government of your country or simply contact us, we will try to help you!

estimated annual cost

The cost varies taking into account factors such as the chosen degree, the type and place of accommodation and the scholarships and grants. Nonetheless, what influences the most is the chosen university. Depending on whether it is public or private, the price increases or decreases, even though this is not always true. There are some public universities that due to the reputation achieved through their years of history, fix higher prices than other public universities. In addition, we must take into account that prices tend to be higher for non-European students.

In conclusion, the estimated price for each institution (without including scholarships and/or grants) is:

Public universities: 2 000 € for European students, 5 000 € for non-European students.

Private universities: 14 000 €

University of Applied Sciences: 2 000 € for European students, 5 000 € for non-European students.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

The Netherlands has different scholarships and grants available that can be requested. Mostly they are for European students, but there are also some options available for students from outside of Europe. Some are given by the Government and many others by both, universities of the departure country or from The Netherlands.

To obtain some of these scholarships you must meet some requirements. One of the most requested is that you work a minimum of 56 hours per month. So, by working only 14 hours per week you can request the student travel product, a card to travel for free or with discounts on public transport. Another one is the regular loan, which consists of a monthly grant of a maximum of 882 €. Of course, there are more types of loans, but they are more difficult to obtain due to the high number of requirements.

The most requested grant is the Tuition Fee Loan, which consists of a quantity of 2100 € per year, approximately and has very low interest, only 0,04%. You will be able to repay it in instalments without any problems and it is the first one you should request. It has a limit of 35 years on its repayment, which starts two years after you graduate.

FUTURE JOB OPPORTUNITIES

The first thing we need to highlight about this country is that nowadays it has an unemployment rate of less than 4%. This, despite being a trademark and something few countries can claim, highlights a static and dynamic labour market at the same time.

There is a great labour demand, from jobs where experience isn’t needed like kitchen helper, waiter, shop assistant, etc. (jobs to which you can gain access to request grants and which you will be able to combine with your studies) to jobs that provide a sufficient income to live in this beautiful country and indulge in some treats. There is a high demand for technicians, in the logistic, industrial and agricultural sectors.

Taxes are subject to modifications depending on the individual income, but the minimum inter-professional salary is 1 635’60 €. The average salary is 2 575€, which will allow you to pay the rent or the mortgage of a house, supply the basic needs and save for unforeseen expenses. But, above all, to enjoy life!

We also need to emphasize that it is such an innovative country, The Netherlands, encourages the business creation and the economic independence of young people. Its aim is that young people contribute with ideas to expand the market, produce goods and improve the country. All this allows them to work in something they like and inspires them from the beginning.
