WHY STUDY IN SPAIN?

Located in the western part of Europe, Spain is one of the best destinations to travel to if you want to study for a year abroad. The Spanish are known as some of the friendliest people in the world. With them, you will not miss laughs, parties and fun; always accompanied by a beer and “patatas bravas” (a typical dish of Spain which consists of potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce). All this with the good weather, and sun the 365 days of the year, which will allow you to enjoy the landscapes of this country: beaches, mountains, the countryside, rivers, lakes and so much more.

Being a destination where there’s good weather all year, many students choose it as the country to take their Erasmus or to study a year abroad. This means that in all of the most known cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Salamanca or Sevilla there are many international students. The atmosphere is quite multicultural and at all moments the Spanish will make an effort to understand you so you can feel at home.

We must highlight that Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, in fact, it is one of the top three most widely known languages. Learning this language will open many doors in the future, as it is spoken throughout South America and Spain, and many other countries maintain it as a co-official language. In addition, Spain has some of the best business universities in the world, which will help you find a job very quickly.

Degrees usually last 4 years. In many universities the fourth year is divided into a first four-month period, where there are classes and exams; and a second one, dedicated to the TFG (Spanish acronym for end-of-bachelor thesis) and internships.  This can vary depending on the degree you study, since, for example, Medical Degree consists of 6 years.

PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

Public universities offer courses relatively affordable, with good value for money. Many students choose Spain as a destination for their studies since they have a wide offer of degrees and a good number of places. The price can vary depending on the residence country.

Public universities are much more economical than private ones, despite many of them having a high reputation. Thanks to that, a great number of exchange students opt for this country, which creates a multi-ethnic atmosphere which encourages diversity.

Private universities

Private universities, on the other hand, have a higher cost and fewer places. Nonetheless, they make no distinction between residents and non-residents, the price tends to be the same. Usually, they are universities with no more than 20.000 students.

They are self-financing due to loans, research prizes, grants, and the help of former students. State subsidies are not granted to them, but they usually have more advanced facilities and more personalised attention.

accomodation

There are many accommodation options for the students, both residents and foreigners. Residences on the university campus, shared flats or houses. Usually, you will have at your disposal an individual bedroom and shared bathroom, kitchen, living room and dining room. Some flats have a terrace, others are remodelled, all depends on your budget and its location.

All the options have their advantages and disadvantages, so the decision is based on the comfort and habits of each person. It is advisable to live in a residence during the first months because it provides you with more personalized services and you will feel at home. Naturally, a residence has a higher cost than a shared flat, but it will all depend on the area where it is located and the type of bedroom.

specific exams

The requirements asked for gaining access to Spanish universities depend on many factors:

If you are an European student and you meet the university admission requirements from your country of origin, you have a title of European High School, or you have a diploma of International Baccalaureate you can take part in the pre-enrolment process to gain access to the university, following the next steps:

  • Check the required documentation of the university you want to attend.
  • In most cases, you will have to prove your academic record through the UNEDassis service (University Application Service for International Students in Spain). Through this certificate, you will obtain your mark from 5 to 10 points so you can request a place.
  • Many universities have a higher minimum grade than a 10. That’s why you will have to sit the specific part of university entrance exams or make some Tests of Specific Competencies (PCE) organised by the UNED.

If you are a student from outside of Europe or you don’t meet the university admission requirements from your country of origin, you will have to request the homologation for your High School diploma and sit on the Spanish university entrance exams (EBAU) or the Tests of Specific Competencies (PCE) organised by the UNED.

Don’t worry if at some point you have doubts about the requirements, we will help you at all times!

HOMOLOGATION OF THE SPANISH QUALIFICATIONS

Depending on your country of origin, the process for obtaining the homologation will be different. Therefore, you can check the website of the government of your country or simply contact us, we will try to help you!

estimated annual cost

The cost can vary, bearing in mind factors such as the chosen degree, the type and location of the accommodation and scholarships and grants given. However, what influences the most is the chosen university and the Spanish region (Comunidad Autónoma) where you’re going to study. Depending on whether it is public or private, the price may increase or decrease, although this is not always true. There are some public universities that due to the reputation achieved through their years of history, fix higher prices than other public universities. We must also take into account that prices tend to be higher for non-European students.

Finally, the estimated price for each institution (without possible scholarships/grants) is:

Public universities: 1,500 € for European students, 9,500 € for non-European students

Private universities: between 10,000 € and 15,000 €

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

The scholarships you can apply for in Spain are not granted at an international level. If you want to apply to some national you will be required to have a home or a good Spanish level; in addition, most of them are for graduate students and not for undergraduate ones.

Nonetheless, each university has its programme so that foreign students can study, which means that we should apply for the programmes offered by the universities themselves.  We are going to help you and advise you at all times to know the available grants to make your stay as pleasant and warm as possible.

FUTURE JOB OPPORTUNITIES

The Spanish labour market, as well as that of other countries, is in continuous expansion. Many degrees give the opportunity of finding a prestigious job, which will allow you to have a good salary and live quietly whereas you indulge in some whims.

The degrees with more future job opportunities in Spain are, without a doubt, Business Administration and Management (ADE) and Medicine. Both of them have a sufficient salary to cover the annual and monthly expenses and are also quite requested. In fact, it is not a secret that the minimum admission grades for a degree in medicine are the highest.

In second place, Engineering degrees and Social Work degrees generate many job opportunities. These degrees are quite crowded, but they don’t have such high admission grades, which makes it possible to enrol without any complications.
