Guide about TOEFL & TOEIC

About TOEFL

The TOEFL is an academic exam organized by the American Educational Institution Testing Service (ETS), which assesses practical English skills. It is one of the most common exams and is internationally recognized. This is done by people who wish to obtain academic degrees, work abroad, participate in foreign exchange programmes and obtain visas to visit major countries.

Unlike other language tests, the TOEFL cannot be “suspended” and can be taken again every two years. The score scale ranges from 0 to 120 points and the fact that the exams are evaluated in the United States ensures an objective assessment. The waiting time to get the results is only 10 days. Different companies, scholarship programmes and universities use the results of the examination during the selection process. Registering for the exam is quick and easy via the Internet, and the frequency of exam sessions (30-40 times a year) is high.

TOEFL iBT

What is TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is one of the versions of the TOEFL exam. It is an online test that focuses on assessing practical language skills in an academic context and serves to assess the level of English of people who wish to study at universities in English-speaking countries, as well as for immigration and job search.

Registration

Registration for the TOEFL iBT exam can be done online, by phone or by email up to seven days before the session. It is offered more than 50 times a year and can be taken several times with an interval of 12 days between each registration. The cost of the exam is $215 with additional fees for matters such as late registration, rescheduling of the exam, or requests for additional reports or refunds. Upon registration, you can specify up to four universities or institutions to which the results will be sent, although some only accept reports directly from STS.

Results

The result of the iBT exam is the sum of the points received from the four sections: speaking, writing, reading comprehension and listening comprehension. It is graded on a scale from 0 to 120, and each section is scored on a scale from 0 to 30.

The report received by the approved parties includes both the overall assessment and the results of the individual parties. They are delivered online approximately 10 days after the exam.

Usually, a score of 90 points is enough.

Validity

The validity of the TOEFL iBT exam varies depending on the institution or organization that requires it. Generally, the results are valid for two years from the date of the examination. However, some institutions may accept old results or require the review to be repeated after a certain period.

TOEFL iTP

What is TOEFL iTP?

The TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) is a written test that measures the English level of non-native people in the professional or personal field. Unlike other TOEFL exams, the ITP is focused on those who want to demonstrate their command of the language in situations outside of an academic environment. It is not common for educational institutions in English-speaking countries to accept the TOEFL ITP as an entry requirement.

Registration

You should go to the academic institution where you study. The institution will be responsible for making the necessary applications to ETS, the body responsible for the TOEFL, to administer the exam.

Results

After taking the TOEFL ITP test, you will be able to view your results approximately 6 days after the test date via your ETS account. You will receive an email notification when your results are available. You will be able to view your results both through the official TOEFL app and by logging into your online account. Score reports will be available for download in PDF format within 8 days of your exam date.

Validity

The validity of the TOEFL ITP exam varies depending on how it is used. If used for educational purposes, such as being admitted to a degree program at a university, for example, it serves for two years.

If used for employment or immigration purposes, the validity may be different and a more up-to-date version of the test may be required.

Differences between iTP and iTB

  • The TOEFL ITP is a paper-and-pencil exam that is administered at a test centre, while the TOEFL iBT is an online exam that is administered at an authorized test centre.
  • Content: The TOEFL ITP assesses listening comprehension, grammatical structure and vocabulary, and reading comprehension skills. The TOEFL iBT assesses these same skills but also includes a speaking section and a writing section.
  • Duration: The TOEFL ITP lasts about 2. 5 hours, while the TOEFL iBT lasts about 4 hours.
  • Score: The maximum TOEFL ITP score is 677 points, while the maximum TOEFL iBT score is 120 points.
  • Availability: The TOEFL ITP is only available to be administered on an institutional basis, i. e. at educational institutions or companies that request it. The TOEFL iBT is administered at authorized test centres around the world and can be taken on regular dates.
  • In summary, the TOEFL ITP is a more limited version of the TOEFL exam that is administered on an institutional basis, while the TOEFL iBT is the most common version of the exam that is administered online and taken at an authorized testing centre.

TOEFL Junior

What is TOEFL Junior?

The TOEFL Junior is an English exam designed for students over the age of 11 who want to measure their level of English proficiency.

It uses common themes and situations for high school students and is primarily used as an assessment tool, to determine the English proficiency of students studying at international schools, for admission to international educational programs, and to certify English proficiency when applying for scholarships or educational exchanges abroad.

Registration

  1. Visit the official Educational Testing Service (ETS) website.
  2. Select the TOEFL Junior exam on the home page.
  3. Select the country and city where you want to take the exam.
  4. Select the date on which you want to take the exam.
  5. Provide the required information, including your full name, contact information and desired exam level (level 1, level 2 or level 3).
  6. Make the payment of the exam fee. The cost varies by country and level.

Results

The TOEFL Junior is a test that covers multiple assessment levels, meaning that a single test can be used to assess students of different ages and levels. The results determine the level of language proficiency of each candidate, which is ranked at one of the five proposed levels in line with the levels set out in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Validity

2 years from the date the exam is taken.

This validity applies only to the date of the examination score and not to the date the scores are sent to an institution. Therefore, if an institution requires that TOEFL Junior scores be valid at the time of application, be sure to schedule the exam well in advance so that the scores are within the required validity window.

TOEIC

About the TOEIC

The TOEIC is a world-renowned assessment that measures the ability to communicate in English in the workplace. The questions in the exam focus on work situations such as presentations, meetings, writing and reading emails, among others. The most popular version is the TOEIC Listening and Reading Test, which gives a score on a scale of 10 to 990.

Registration

  2. Select the date and time of the exam you want.
  3. Create an account on the website and complete the registration form with your personal information.
  4. Select the type of exam you want to take, either the TOEIC Listening and Reading or the TOEIC Speaking and Writing.
  5. Pay the registration fee for the exam through the website.
  6. You will receive a registration confirmation email with details about the location and time of the exam.

Results

The maximum total score that can be obtained on the full exam is 990.

The most common way to interpret the TOEIC test results is to compare the candidate’s score with the score required for the job or educational program you are looking for.

Validity

There is no fixed expiration date, as its validity depends on certain factors, such as the acceptance of the seniority of the certificate at the place where it is to be filed. It will always depend on the entity requesting and receiving it, not on the issuer.

Types of TOEIC tests

The TOEIC exam consists of two different tests: the TOEIC Listening & Reading and the TOEIC Speaking & Writing, designed to assess the candidate’s English skills both passively (listening and reading) and actively (speaking and writing) in a professional environment.

In general, the Listening & Reading version is the most widely used by companies and institutions to assess a candidate’s level of English, while the Speaking & Writing version may be particularly useful for those planning to travel to English-speaking countries.

TOEIC Bridge

What is TOEIC Bridge?

The TOEIC Bridge exam is a version of the TOEIC exam that assesses the level of English used in everyday situations. This test is done on paper and measures listening and reading comprehension. The exam scores are based on levels A1 to B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Results

To interpret the results of the TOEIC Bridge, a score scale from level A1 to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is used.

Validity

It is important to note that the results of the TOEIC Bridge are valid for two years and that there is no minimum or maximum score for passing or failing the exam. The interpretation of the results depends on the candidate’s objective and the requirements of the educational or work programme required by the examination.
